Hand-wired

Wire crocheted jewelry by Adriana Laura Mendez

If you find yourself charmed of late by hand-wired crochet jewelry, you're not alone. The technique is rare and seldom seen in contemporary pieces, but it had been popping up a lot more recently.

For another take on crotched jewelry, have a look at these creations by Argentinean designer Adriana Laura Mendez

These pieces are unique for their unconventional weaving process (Mendez doesn't start with patterns, but creates the designs as she goes, while in the process of weaving) and the incorporation of several types of gemstones. Look for great combinations of 14k gold or sterling silver wire linked up with Swarovski crystals, onyx, rhodochrosite, obsidian or amethyst.

Every designer has a story of what she did before becoming a jeweler, and Adriana Laura Mendez is no exception. Before deciding to follow her passion for jewelry-making, Mendez owned a landscaping company for over 20 years. In 2006, making jewelry became her newest hobby. Two years later, Mendez's son remarked that her pieces had selling potential. A short time after that, mother and son teamed up to form the Adriana Laura Mendez line, and have been an unstoppable hit ever since.

With rings, earrings, bracelets and pendants, there's a whole lot to love about this brand. While we adore all of of Mendez's pieces, our absolute favorites are her necklaces, where originality, attention to detail and uber-gutsy fashion statements are in full force.

While the necklaces are more event specific (think a wedding or an evening calling for an avant-garde look), the rest of the line is versatile enough to be worn anywhere, from work or a casual evening out to a night clubbing in the city.

If, after all that, you're still not feeling satisfied, fear not. She's got a page on Blogspot, too.

Enjoy!
