So you have decided to take the plunge and start selling your jewelry online? Or perhaps you have been trying to sell online for a while, but for some reason the sales just aren´t flooding in like you wanted? Here are some top tips for selling your jewellery online...
Eye Popping Photos
Your jewelry photographs should look clear, with the detail highly visible. It's a good idea to take several shots of each piece, showing different angles and interesting details up close. Professional photographs are essential, but if you really want to earn decent money from online jewelry sales then investing in a good SLR camera is a must.
Mouth Watering Descriptions
When buying jewelry online people lose out on the tactile experience. You have to make up for that using words to describe the piece in a way that appeals to them on a sensory or emotional level.
Compelling Keywords
Remember that you don't want to attract just human customers, but search engine robots too. Keywords allow visitors to easily locate items on your site via searching, while the good automatons at Google and Bing can properly file your pages into the right search results page. It's worth doing a bit of research into which keywords will be most effective. Forget massively competitive broad terms such as "silver ring" and choose more specific keywords such as "handmade silver ring with moonstones".
Consistent Pricing
Don't keep raising and lowering your pricing. Choose your price bracket and stand firm! Also take into consideration where else your jewelry is sold. One sure fire way to damage your business is to make your online prices significantly lower than any retailer who is selling your work. Likewise customers are unlikely to buy from your online store if you are selling your jewelry on eBay at a cheaper price.
Overload on Info
What are your shipping rates? What is your return policy? Are all materials ethically sourced? Make sure any questions that your customers might have are clearly answered on a FAQ page somewhere. This is also great place for you to highlight some of your unique selling points (USPs). "Free cute kitten with every necklace purchase!" "All designs are sprinkled with fairydust to prevent tarnish!"
Contact me! Here, over here! Email, phone...anyway you want!
I am often stunned by the number of jewelers who still don't offer a way for customers to contact them via their website. Make sure at least to offer one means of contact, whether a contact form, email address or phone number.
Be Social
One of the best ways to boost sales is to interact with your customers. Create a blog and ask visitors what they think about your latest materials purchase. Have a Facebook page and run giveaways or contests. Send out a newsletter and ask them which colors they want to see in your next collection.
Obviously, this is just a crash course in some of the basics, and I will be going into more detail about selling jewelry online in the coming weeks. Be sure to check in regularly to see what's new, or Become a Fan of The Jewelery Report on Facebook and say hi!
