Making jewelry to fit all sizes is nearly impossible. You can get closer by adding extender chains or other adjustable options, but there will still be people who need a custom size. In addition to sizes, some customers will want to change the clasp, and even the layout of beads sometimes. If you can offer alterations to your customers at no charge, you will increase sales. Even better still, if you can do this on the spot at shows and markets, you will get sales you would have otherwise lost.
Giving your customers options is always a good idea if you want to show that you care about their needs and are willing to work with them. Clasps are a very good example, especially on bracelets. Some people prefer a lobster claw because it stays put, but others cannot clasp those on their own and prefer a toggle, hook and loop, or even a magnetic clasp. Offering those choices and doing them for free is a great way to increase customer satisfaction.
You don’t always have to do the alterations for free. You can use that as a special for certain shows, customers or times of the year to help bring in new interest. If you do decide to charge, make it a reasonable charge and one that is easy to understand. A flat rate is the simplest way, but if the alteration will require a big increase in cost for the piece, you may need to add more to the charge.
If you offer alterations at shows, be sure to put a big sign on your display to tell customers. I can’t count how many times I have heard something like, “I don’t buy jewelry that often because my wrist is too big.” Follow that statement with, “I’d be happy to make a bracelet that fits you, and I have the supplies to do it right here and now.” It is a great way to convert browsers into buyers, and it makes them feel good to have something that is customized just for them.
Customization options are a great way to increase sales and customer satisfaction, and people love to watch jewelry being made, which draws even more attention.
