I have to admit that when I first stumbled upon the work of Stefania Brusatin, I was distracted by the rather strange editorial photography choice of placing the designs on top of open fruit. However, the unique lines and techniques of her jewelry intrigued and attracted me. It is the kind of jewelry that I would create if I was brave enough, but always find myself erring on the side of convention. Here, she talks to The Jewelry Report about her work.
What are your favorite materials to work with?
Any material that I can get my hands on IS my favorite material at that moment.
What is your favorite design, and is this your best seller?
My favorite design is a pentagon silver and niello broach I made for a class in Florence, Italy. Inside of the pentagon you see your own reflection and a sea of tiny little circles of different colors. The walls vary between the silver and the niello colors
How did you first get into jewelry art in general?
I’ve been very manual since early age. Doing a necklace as a child, it came to me that jewelry design is what I wanted to do; it was my passion ever since I can remember.
Can you tell us more about the themes that run through your jewelry?
Marry go Round is a playful collection where natural and synthetic meat. All the pieces are hand-made in silver. The theme on this one was inner beauty. Something I realized when the first ring was done looking at the inner stones. Techniques are a good source of inspiration. I wanted something light; with movement (I love movement).
Around the Circle theme was abstraction according to a well known abstract painter Kandinsky. His geometrical elements such as the circle, straight lines and curves were the base of this collection.
What do you have planned for future collections?
I’ve started my third collection with an idea on mind ‘’we need more fun in our lives’’, enough of TOO MUCH depression, or pressure felt by today’s modern world.
With this new collection I want to conjure up joy, amusement, excitement, pleasant anticipation, relaxation, stress reduction and sense of humor, lightness a recess from the responsibilities of life.
Do you get more excited about the design or technical aspects of jewelry art?
I get more excited when designing; you can do it any where at any time. Trying to create the unexpected without thinking on how is going to be done is very therapeutic
Can you name another jewelry designer whose work you admire?
Victoire de Castellane, Dior’s jewelry designer and Majo Fruithof.
Do you find the process of experimentation frustrating or inspiring?
Searching for new techniques at the source of inspiration consumes much time. There is always the urge to create in order to progress.
Do you prefer doing retail or trade events?
Retail.
If you could have any jewelry super-power to help you with your jewelry what would it be?
Extra arms will be handy but laser eyes for soldering without the heating problem would be the BEST. I could solder a piece that has plastic without worrying of melting it down.
