Is it just me who finds something comforting in a piece of handmade jewelry? Something about seeing something made from scratch, by hand, is both compelling and inspiring. That is exactly what Eunice Tan delivers in her collections. Here, she talks to The Jewelry Report about her work.
What are your favorite materials to work with?
I love to source for vintage brooches, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, or rings from all around the world – be it from thrift stalls, flea markets, online or even my mom’s box of jewellery. I would complement it with Swarovski crystalls, semi-precious stones, Chinese adornments and 14k/18k gold elements and whip them into art-to-wear pieces!
What is your favorite design, and is this your best seller?
My favourite design is definitely incorporating Chinese Traditional Buttons into my work. It is about mixing the Eastern and the Western materials together yet making it modern and wearable. And yes, it is very well received by my customers!
How did you first get into jewelry art in general?
Well, one could say I stumbled into this because this is not what I planned for. I actually quit a pretty high paying job to do this, but I am surely enjoying every bit of it.
Can you tell us more about the themes that run through your jewelry?
It is a myriad of oriental styles and vintage touch combined. Asian culture is something not to be forgotten and certainly not old, if you know how to instil a modern edge to it.
What do you have planned for future collections?
My plan is to expand the brand from sunny isle Singapore to across the globe beginning with the Asia Pacific regions as the years ensue.
Do you get more excited about the design or technical aspects of jewelry art?
Definitely design!
Can you name another jewelry designer whose work you admire?
Can I say, Coco Chanel? Everyone loves a timeless and classic piece in their jewellery box, right?
Do you find the process of experimentation frustrating or inspiring?
Honestly, frustrating but it gives you strength. But it is worth the toils of creating and destroying just to craft that perfect piece.
Do you prefer doing retail or trade events?
Retail – because I get to hear, listen, communicate, interact and explain the whole concept behind my design to the ones who will be wearing my pieces. Then, I get to hear and see their smiles and laughters after!
If you could have any jewelry super-power to help you with your jewelry what would it be? (Perhaps flame throwing hands to fire your pieces quickly? Mind reading for your customers? Extra arms? :)
I wish for my jewelry super-power to have my eyes as a camera. One blink and a beautiful shot of my jewellery is taken!
