Another talented jeweler shares her thoughts about a career and calling as a jewelry artist with The Jewelry Report. Dorota Toczke of Jewellery Bijou creates intricate, beautiful designs by hand, selling online.
What are your favorite materials to work with?
Due to the time involved in making each handcrafted piece, I prefer to use only precious metals with pearls and natural gemstones. I use only materials that allow for distinctive, elegant designs while keeping my prices affordable. My favourite gemstones are aquamarine, citrine and quartz.
What is your favorite design, and is this your best seller?
I mostly do one of kind pieces, so I actually cannot state which one is my best seller. I give each piece of jewelry I create the expertise and love. Each piece means something to me.
How did you first get into jewelry art in general?
Few years ago I received a necklace as a gift, I like them so much and wanted to have them in a different colour as well, however I could not find them. I decided to make them myself so. Very quickly after discovering pliers, silver wire and gemstones ,I became completely obsessed with making jewelry. At first it was just a hobby something to keep myself busy. I quickly became more and more creative and began selling my work
It was not until years later when the idea of creating jewelry as a business emerged.
What do you have planned for future collections?
My next project is a very rich necklace and then surprise,surprise,surpise...
Do you get more excited about the design or technical aspects of jewelry art?
I am definitely getting more excited about the design itself .I love to have images flying around my head. Sometime I get inspired by something I have seen, such as a flower, other times it could come from music or a poem.
Can you name another jewelry designer whose work you admire?
The one person who has constantly made me gasp in awe is Magdalena Borejko, but I must also name Iza Malczyk and Jennifer of JLeeOhio as my favorites as I love virtually everything they create.
Do you find the process of experimentation frustrating or inspiring?
I always find that process very inspiring.
Do you prefer doing retail or trade events?
I am just selling my silver jewellery online, however I would be happy to have the opportunity to do a trade event and I hope something like that will come up in the nearest future.
If you could have any jewelry super-power to help you with your jewelry what would it be? (Perhaps flame throwing hands to fire your pieces quickly? Mind reading for your customers? Extra arms? :)
I would like never to be tired and never need to sleep.
My profile
I am an Artist, specializing in creating exquisite and mostly one of a kind pieces of wearable Jewellery art.
My main focus when I make a piece of jewellery is to make something that differs from high street fashion. That is why all the earrings, bracelets, necklaces, rings and pendants I make are handmade and unique. I always design each piece of jewellery individually, with great attention to style and sophistication.
Every piece of jewellery offered on this website is completely hand-crafted. I make every item myself and, consequently, it cannot be found anywhere else.
I feel as though there is nothing I cannot create, as long as I have my trusty spool of wire in my hand.
I like to think of my art as making “unique jewellery for unique people”. My goal is to provide every single customer not only with a piece of jewellery of the highest quality but also to offer them a truly personal experience. That is why for every individual piece I try to capture the beauty of the materials I use, their textures and colours, giving each product its own unique character.
