This week's interview is with silversmith Marne Ryan. Her work consists of unique, handcrafted pieces in a variety of metals.Rings - Many people use them as wedding bands .
How did you first get into jewelry art in general?
In high school, my art teachers showed us how to make rings. I though how cool , I can play with fire and bang stuff with a hammer in a constructive way.
Can you tell us more about the themes that run through your jewelry?
I am inspired by the textures and patterns found in nature and fabrics.
What do you have planned for future collections?
I am interested abstract leaf patterns.
Do you get more excited about the design or technical aspects of jewelry art?
I love learning technical process so I can create my design without having to constantly "reinvent the wheel" I have never understood the dialogue of technique versus concept.
Can you name another jewelry designer whose work you admire?
Here are a few... Kinuko Takio lives in Nara Japan, Betty Helen Longhi, Todd Reed, Isabelle Posillco, Eleanor Moty , Yumi Ueno , Birgit Kupke-Peyla, Tom Mann and Takayasu Miszuno.
Do you find the process of experimentation frustrating or inspiring?
Many of the best designs have come out of the experiments to bring a piece back from the dead.
Do you prefer doing retail or trade events?
I chose to do Retail events over trade events many years ago. I make all my work by hand so I can only make so many pieces a year. Once in awhile I have an apprentice but our agreement is for the student to develop their skill and personal design. The length of the apprenticeship is based on their skill group. There have been a few times I have folks work for me part time about ten years ago but making my work is so intuitive it is difficult to include another in the process.
If you could have any jewelry super-power to help you with your jewelry what would it be? (Perhaps flame throwing hands to fire your pieces quickly? Mind reading for your customers? Extra arms? :)
Mind reading always a desirable skill but I would prefer someone to manage the office, marketing, keeping track of the inventory and the internet. I spend 70% of my time handling paperwork, mailing packages and phoning. Ok I can speak on the phone and solder at the same time.
