If you have read any of the jeweler interviews here on The Jewelry Report, you'll know that I often ask jewelers what motivates them. The answers are often very similar, in that both the creative process itself and the end result of seeing someone wearing their designs are enough to keep us going. However, most jewelers go through times where they feel disheartened, frustrated or uninspired, and at these moments it can be difficult to keep working.
If your sales and self-confidence are low, or you feel like your muse hasn't visited in a while, here are some tips on how to motivate yourself when all natural motivation has evaporated:
- Take a Break
Sometimes walking away from your bench is just what you need to refresh yourself. Whether it is for a few hours, or even a few days, you are sure to return feeling more energetic and enthusiastic that when you left. I often take some time to browse through jewelry books and magazines, and my own sketch books where ideas might lie waiting to be discovered. Some people find it inspiring to look at other jeweler's work, but be wary that if you are feeling a tadinadequate then this might not be the best way to lift your spirits! - Buy New Supplies
I am probably too guilt of inventing excuses to buy new jewelry supplies but nevertheless working in a new material or medium can remind you why you love jewelry making. Challenge yourself to work in a new material, try out a new technique or indulge in an investment piece to take your jewelry to the next level. Don't focus too much on your productivity, but enjoy the experimentation process. - Browse Your Collections
When was the last time you looked through your own catalogue, website, brochure or online store? Do you have a Flickr gallery that you have never flickd through? Now is the time to take a trip down memory lane. What designs are you proud of? Which designs show you how much you have grown as an artist? Perhaps you will find designs that you can re-invent, or re-release. - Look at Your Highlights
If you are feeling unmotivated due to a lack of recent success, then take a moment to reflect on your accomplishments. Whether this is the design award you won last year, or the memory of your first ever sale, remembering the good times can often take the edge off the bad. - Ask For Testimonials
Why not turn to your customers for a pick me up? Email your mailing list asking for new testimonials for your website or marketing efforts. For a better result and a chance of more sales, entice customers with a special offer or discount if they send you a testimonial. You can also send out a briefquestionnaire , asking why they bought your jewelry, where they have worn it, and what types of jewelry they would like to see you make in the future.
